I painted this watercolour in 2000 but wasn’t too happy with it. Had almost forgot about it but found it recently and thought it wasn’t so bad after all. It may not be exactly what I planned, and I believe I’ll try it again, perhaps on a larger scale, to see if I can capture my initial idea.

As always, love your colors, especially the hints of colors of the buildings, and the street. Is this pastel? I only ever could work in oils, not even acrylics. I never even tried pastels. Just a chicken, I guess. I just couldn’t get a feel for them. And watercolors?? I wanted so bad to work in them but never had the talent or patience.
Can I mention the two things I noticed? First, when you paint the light around the tree, while the paint is still wet, grab a fan brush and lightly pull the rings of light away from the lamp and loosen those more solid lines. And second, in the upper left corner, the perspective of the buildings is a little off. Like they should be the tiniest bit narrower at the bottom. I hope you’re OK with me doing that… I sort of hesitated.

I know what you mean, but my intention was to capture reflections in raindrops. It didn’t quite work, I agree. Regarding the perspective, it’s the roofs that are slightly off. Now you know why I want to work it out again. Funny though that my original idea was to have much darker colours, but that might be easier to achieve in acrylics.
That’s beautiful shading for watercolors. That’s what scares me about using them, not being able to shade that way without having obvious lines of demarcation between. That’s why I thought it was pastel. I do like the lightness in this, it reminds me of rain during the summer.
When I started painting I had only watercolours and that taught me a lot. I can imagine that they can be daunting to use, but it’s always the same — who dares to, has a chance to learn and possibly excel. I’ve never tried oil painting but that could change too.
